The_Writer_A_Programmable_240_Year_Old_Creation_by_Pierre_Jaquet_Droz-The-Capsule

This astounding device is the work of clockwork master Pierre Jaquet-Droz. Capable of being programmed to write up to 40 characters using ink and a goose feather, which he often re-dips and shakes to prevent spilling, The Writer is believed to be one of the remote ancestors of modern computers.

Created over 240 years ago, The Writer was around when The United States weren’t united, he watched the fall of the Spanish Empire, and the world’s population was still below 1 billion. The Writer is still completely functional, although the text is rarely changed, and is kept at The Musée d’Art et d’Histoire, Switzerland, the home town of The Writer.

Planetary- Software preservation

iPad app Planetary has just been added to the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum’s collection, but the institution has also gone as step further by acquiring the app’s code. This is the first time the museum has acquired a piece of code, and it has also worked with the original creators to make the source code available to everyone, in an attempt to preserve software as if it was a living thing.
