Mark Barone is a painter who knows the pain of losing a dear pet. When his partner Marina began researching to adopt a new dog she came across loads of information on how many dogs die each day at kill shelters across America. 5,500 shelter dogs are killed every day in the United States. When Marina shared this information with Barone he didn’t want to see it,  “Two days later, he said, ‘I have a really clear vision of what I want to do to solve the problem.'” Barone set out to give those animals a face by committing to paint 5,500 portraits of shelter dogs, using photos of the animals from shelter websites from around the country.

Over two years into the project now, Barone has more than 3,500 portraits complete. Most of the dogs are painted on 12″x12″ wood panels. To find out more about Mark Barone’s ultimate goal for these paintings please visit his website “An Act of Dog”.
